A National Treasure of Japan, Cypress Trees screens by Kano Eitoku, inspires Rei Nakanishi and “Cypress Trees 2023” is created as a part of Tokyo National Museum 150th commemoration programme “Have a Eureka Moment with National Treasures of Japan”, an extraordinary opportunity of re-interpreting National Treasures of Japan by contemporary artists. - concept - In creating this work, I attempted to retain the composition and lines of the Japanese aesthetic found in the ‘Cypress tree’, and to add superficial colors and textures that shift and morph like the changes of the times. When interpreting a painting, I am conscious of “line” and “paint” as in the functions of Photoshop and Illustrator. The “line” is the part that has remained unchanged throughout the history of painting, such as the outline or motif. I feel that the values, colors, and moods that change with the times, such as “paint,” are shifting superficially. I believe that by dealing with the superficial aspects that change, such as the colors and the values of an era, the essential things that remain constant will be brought into light. -Rei Nakanishi This artwork is displayed in Meteverse.
